Cruets with wine and water were filled before the Mass began and placed on the credence table.
The celebrant, carrying the empty chalice, goes to the right side of the altar, to receive the cruet of wine from the server.
The celebrant pours wine into the chalice.
The celebrant then blesses the water, before mixing a small amount with the wine in the chalice, while praying:
Amen.
O God, who in a wonderful manner did create and ennoble human nature, and still more wonderfully has renewed it; grant that, by the mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of his divinity who vouchsafed to become partaker of our humanity, Jesus Christ, your son, our Lord: who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.
The celebrant offers up the chalice of wine to God, praying:
Amen.
We offer to you, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching your clemency, that it may ascend in the sight of your divine majesty with a sweet savour, for our own salvation and for that of the whole world. Amen.
Having replaced the chalice of wine upon the altar and covering it with the pall, the celebrant bows down and says the prayer of the three young men in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:39-40):
In spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine: et sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.
In the spirit of humility and with a contrite heart receive us, O Lord, and grant that the sacrifice which we offer this day in your sight, may be pleasing to you, O Lord God.
The celebrant then invokes the Holy Spirit and blesses the offerings:
Come, O Sanctifier, almighty and eternal God, and bless ✠ this sacrifice prepared for your holy name.
